His name shall be called Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called...Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.”

As Prince of Peace, the Son given unto us will reign.

Collins Concise Dictionary defines peace as:

1.      The state existing during the absence of war
2.      A treaty marking the end of war
3.      A state of harmony between people and groups
4.      Law and order within a State
5.      Absence of mental anxiety
6.      A state of stillness, silence or serenity.

How does peace affect us personally?

It means we are in a state of harmony with others. There is an absence of mental anxiety; and there is a quietness and serenity in the soul. But, all this is really only possible if we have the peace of God in our hearts.

Isaiah 48:22 states, “There is no peace,” says the Lord, “For the wicked.”

In John 14:27 the Lord Jesus speaking to his disciples, on the night in which He was betrayed by Judas Iscariot; said these words, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Colossians 1:20, “...having made peace through the blood of His cross.”

In Ephesians 2:14 we are told, “For He Himself is our peace...”

If we have the peace of God in our hearts, all is well.

His name shall be called Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called...Everlasting Father...”

The literal translation for Everlasting Father in this verse is ‘Father of Eternity’.

This seems to me to be more in keeping with what is revealed to us in the New Testament. For in the New Testament Scriptures we see God revealed as a Triune God; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

In verse 6 of Isaiah chapter 9 the Child to be born is also the Son given – God the Son. God the Son is revealed to us in the man Jesus of Nazareth.

This is the One who is ‘Father of Eternity’.

The Hebrew word ad is used to denote eternity, everlasting, evermore and perpetual.

The Hebrew word awb is used to denote:

1.      Father of an individual
2.      God as Father of His people
3.      Head or founder of a household, group, family, or clan
4.      Ruler or chief.

Let’s look at the words of the Lord Jesus Christ in Revelation 22:12, 13, “(12) And behold I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give everyone according to his works. (13) I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”

As God the Son, eternity originated with Him and eternity finishes with Him!

He is the Father of eternity!

His name shall be called Mighty God

Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called...Mighty God...”

This Child born unto us, this Son given unto us is the Mighty God.

Collins Concise Dictionary defines mighty as:
1.      Having or indicating might; powerful or strong
2.      Very large; vast
3.      Very great in extent, importance etc.

Strong’s Enhanced Lexicon defines the Hebrew word gibbowr as strong, mighty. Gibbowr comes from another root word gabar which means to prevail, have strength, be strong, be powerful and be great.

The Hebrew word used for God in Isaiah 9:6 is ‘El.

‘El is in the singular. It signifies One who is strong and One who is the primary cause of all creation. It is often used in conjunction with other descriptions of God, such as:

·         “Almighty God” (Genesis 17:1)
·         “Everlasting God” (Genesis 21:33)
·         “A jealous God” (Exodus 20:5)
·         The living God (Joshua 3:10)
·         “A merciful God” (Deuteronomy 4:31)
·         A faithful God” (Deuteronomy 7:9)

The Son given to us is the Jewish Messiah, who is truly God and truly man. How fitting that part of His five fold name is “Mighty God”.

As Mighty God He is to be praised and worshipped.

His name shall be called Counsellor

Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called...Counsellor...”

What is a counsellor? Collins Concise Dictionary defines a counsellor as a person who gives counsel; an advisor. This dictionary also defines counsel as advice or guidance on conduct, behaviour etc. The legal profession’s barristers, solicitors and lawyers are referred to as ‘legal counsel’.

Strong’s Enhanced Lexicon gives us the Hebrew word yaats for this word counsellor in  Isaiah 9:6. The word means to advise, consult, give counsel, counsel, purpose, devise, plan.

This Child to be born, this Son to be given unto us has all the attributes of an extraordinary counsellor.

Let’s consider a couple of incidents in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

Luke 2:42, 46, 47, “(42) And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. (46) Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. (47)  And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.

John 7:44-46, “(44) Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him. (45) Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, ‘Why have you not brought Him?’ (47) The officers answered, ‘No man ever spoke like this Man!’ “

Romans 11:34 states, “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counsellor?” This quotation is taken from the book of Isaiah chapter 40. It’s a very absorbing and instructive chapter on the power, glory and wisdom of God.

Please take a few minutes to read Isaiah chapter 40 and find out for yourself.

His name shall be called Wonderful

Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called Wonderful...”

The word wonderful according to Strong’s Enhanced Lexicon is the Hebrew word pele’.
It means:
1)      Wonder, marvel
1a)       wonder (extraordinary, hard to understand thing)
1b)       wonder (of God’s acts of judgement and redemption)

Pele’ comes from the root word pala’ which means:
§  to be marvellous
§  to be wonderful
§  to be surpassing
§  to be extraordinary
§  to be separate by distinguishing action

When we apply these meanings to the child, to be born of the virgin; we begin to grasp something of the surpassing excellence of this Child who is God-With-Us.

On the one hand we see that this Child will be a remarkable, outstanding individual. On the other hand there is a Divine, mysterious quality to the name which speaks to us of His essential being as God; Immanuel, God-With-Us.
