Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called...Counsellor...”
What is a counsellor?
Collins Concise Dictionary defines a counsellor as a person who gives
counsel; an advisor. This dictionary also defines counsel as advice or
guidance on conduct, behaviour etc. The legal profession’s barristers,
solicitors and lawyers are referred to as ‘legal counsel’.
Strong’s Enhanced Lexicon gives us the Hebrew word yaats
for this word counsellor in Isaiah
9:6. The word means to advise, consult, give counsel, counsel, purpose,
devise, plan.
This Child to be born, this Son to be given unto us has all
the attributes of an extraordinary counsellor.
Let’s consider a couple of incidents in the life of Jesus of
Nazareth.
Luke 2:42, 46, 47, “(42)
And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the
custom of the feast. (46) Now so it was that after three days they found Him in
the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and
asking them questions. (47) And all who
heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.
John 7:44-46, “(44) Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on
Him. (45) Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said
to them, ‘Why have you not brought Him?’ (47) The officers answered, ‘No man ever
spoke like this Man!’ “
Romans 11:34 states, “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His
counsellor?” This quotation is taken from the book of Isaiah chapter 40.
It’s a very absorbing and instructive chapter on the power, glory and wisdom of
God.
Please take a few minutes to read Isaiah chapter 40 and find out
for yourself.
