Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called...Mighty God...”
This Child born unto us, this Son given unto us is the Mighty
God.
Collins Concise Dictionary defines mighty as:
1. Having or
indicating might; powerful or strong
2. Very large;
vast
3. Very great
in extent, importance etc.
Strong’s Enhanced Lexicon defines the Hebrew word gibbowr
as strong, mighty. Gibbowr comes from another root word gabar which
means to prevail, have strength, be strong, be powerful and be great.
The Hebrew word used for God in Isaiah 9:6 is ‘El.
‘El is in the
singular. It signifies One who is strong and One who is the primary cause of
all creation. It is often used in conjunction with other descriptions of God,
such as:
·
“Almighty
God” (Genesis 17:1)
·
“Everlasting
God” (Genesis 21:33)
·
“A jealous
God” (Exodus 20:5)
·
“The living God” (Joshua 3:10)
·
“A merciful
God” (Deuteronomy 4:31)
·
“A faithful God”
(Deuteronomy 7:9)
The Son given to us is the Jewish Messiah, who is truly God
and truly man. How fitting that part of His five fold name is “Mighty God”.
As Mighty God He is to be
praised and worshipped.
