Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called Wonderful...”
The word wonderful according to Strong’s Enhanced Lexicon is
the Hebrew word pele’.
It means:
1) Wonder,
marvel
1a) wonder
(extraordinary, hard to understand thing)
1b) wonder
(of God’s acts of judgement and redemption)
Pele’ comes from the root word pala’ which means:
§ to be
marvellous
§ to be
wonderful
§ to be
surpassing
§ to be
extraordinary
§ to be
separate by distinguishing action
When we apply these meanings to the child, to be born of the
virgin; we begin to grasp something of the surpassing excellence of this Child
who is God-With-Us.
On the one hand we see that this Child will be a remarkable,
outstanding individual. On the other hand there is a Divine, mysterious quality
to the name which speaks to us of His essential being as God; Immanuel,
God-With-Us.
