His name shall be called Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:6, “...His name shall be called...Everlasting Father...”

The literal translation for Everlasting Father in this verse is ‘Father of Eternity’.

This seems to me to be more in keeping with what is revealed to us in the New Testament. For in the New Testament Scriptures we see God revealed as a Triune God; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

In verse 6 of Isaiah chapter 9 the Child to be born is also the Son given – God the Son. God the Son is revealed to us in the man Jesus of Nazareth.

This is the One who is ‘Father of Eternity’.

The Hebrew word ad is used to denote eternity, everlasting, evermore and perpetual.

The Hebrew word awb is used to denote:

1.      Father of an individual
2.      God as Father of His people
3.      Head or founder of a household, group, family, or clan
4.      Ruler or chief.

Let’s look at the words of the Lord Jesus Christ in Revelation 22:12, 13, “(12) And behold I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give everyone according to his works. (13) I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”

As God the Son, eternity originated with Him and eternity finishes with Him!

He is the Father of eternity!
